2. Menu Navigation

Jacob Nielsen stated in 1998 that the web would not reach its full potential until navigation is standardised across websites.

Whilst there is still no standard for website navigation, conforming to one of the following three conventions ensures visitors to your website quickly recognise menu navigation that is familiar to them:

Top menu navigation

www.ferrari.com/English/Pages/Home.aspx

www.livewire.org.au

Left menu navigation

http://investor.google.com

www.healthinsite.gov.au

Top – left combination

This style of navigation has become the most popular:

www.coffey.com/about-coffey/our-sectors

www.oakton.com.au

www.visionaustralia.org

Content placement in the navigation structure

Content at leaf nodes only:

www.coffey.com/our-businesses/coffey-rail/coffey-rail/about-us

www.niteo.com

Content at every node:

www.rocksolid.com.au

www.thespasticcentre.org.au
